If you’re looking for a fun rhythm game, this is the post for you!
The idea of these videos is to have a “random rhythm generator” where you pause the video at random intervals and then have students read the rhythm that is shown. For extra fun, there are also some opportunities to lose a turn, roll again, or lose a point. There are specific directions for a sample game in the description of each video. Since the video is in a random order and relies on you pausing it, you can play many times and always have a different sequence of rhythms/prompts.
Here are the videos in the playlist:
Quarter note, eighth notes, quarter rest
Half note
Sixteenth notes
Syn-co-pa (eighth, quarter, eighth)
These are perfect for reviewing a particular rhythm as a class, but can also work in centers, with a sub, or as an assessment of individual students.
Directions for sample game:
1. Play video
2. Pause at random intervals, read the rhythm. If correct, the team/individual earns one point. If incorrect, the opposing team/individual has a chance to steal the point.
3. If you land on a “Roll Again,” “Broken Heart,” or “Lose a Turn,” follow the directions on the slide then continue with the other team.
4. First team to 10 points is the winner!
This game is perfect as a fun way to review sixteenth notes. It can also be played in small groups, with a sub, or in centers. Save it or add it to your sub playlist for those unexpected absences!
