My students talk about Fortnite all the time. Like I have to ask them to stop talking about it because they're so excited. I finally decided that instead of fighting it, I was going to embrace it. So I made this Rhythm Builder to go with a song called "Find Me" by Marshmello. Apparently I'm old now because I told my students that they were spelling "marshmallow" wrong, and they informed me that I didn't know because I just wasn't cool enough. Oh well. One day you're 23 and the young teacher and the next minute your students are calling you "old."
Here are the rhythms that your students will need to play. The tempo is fast so I made simple rhythms so kids can keep up. I've had the most success having students read and practice all of the rhythms together with no music. Then having students play just their rhythm after splitting the class into 4 groups. Finally, we try the rhythms with the music.
If students find it too difficult to play along with the music, you can have the whole class play only one of the rhythms and then add in a second, and third until you are playing all four rhythms simultaneously.
Older grades might be able to be successful the first time through, but most classes will need a little rehearsal to get it right. Whether you are working for musical accuracy or just a fun rhythm game to play with your students, I guarantee this one will be fun!
To extend the activity; after students have played one instrument, have everyone rotate to a new instrument category and play again! Each rhythm is a new challenge and kids learn from repetition.
Sample instruments:
Blue: Drums--hand drums, floor drums, gathering drums, etc.
Yellow: Scrapers--guiros and crow sounders
Orange: Woods--Claves or rhythm sticks
Red: Metals--Triangle, tambourine, cowbell

No matter which way you choose to do this activity, your class will have a blast!
